Wi     Win $100!   EduTron Math Contest 003  (September 30, 2008)

Your school is given a special treat: 120 people (students and teachers) are invited to a postseason Red Sox game with a big discount. The catch is, you need to solve the ticket problem first. The special prices offered are: $10 for a Green Monster seat, $6 for a Field Box seat, and $3.5 for a Bleachers seat. The total price for the 120 tickets must be $600. Two soft drinks, 2 hot dogs and a bag of peanuts are included with each ticket.

Question: How many of each kind of ticket should your school buy so the total price is EXACTLY $600 for the 120 tickets? In other words, you must buy a total of 120 tickets and the total price has to be exactly $600.

Submission Deadline: October 19, 2008. All teachers and administrators are eligible to submit their solutions to win the Math Prize.

Prizes: The best solution from each grade span (K-5, 6-8, and Administrators) will be awarded $100 on or before October 31, 2008. Math teachers in grades 9-12 are not eligible to enter – they are expected to know it and can play the role of consultants to provide hints (not solutions) for teams that enter the contest. Winning consultants win an EduTron pen.

Team size: No more than 3 people.

Suggestions: Use all the math you can muster to come up with the solution. Submit more than one approaches if you can.  Tap into high school teachers and other experts for advice and hints ONLY. Learn as much as you can in the process!    [Jiminy Cricket : That’s the real prize.]
